Together We Can Help The Batwa
Help Themselves

Education Initiatives

At BDP, we are committed to supporting Batwa education by providing various forms of assistance. A few of the ways we do this is by covering school fees and providing educational materials to ensure Batwa children are attaining the best education possible. Additionally, we take care of lunch fees and pay facilitation and salaries for their teachers, ensuring they can focus on their essential role in educating the students. We also purchase land, support the construction of classrooms and other necessary school structures, and provide required resources such as teachers’ materials, books, and other items needed for the smooth running of these schools.

We currently oversee four schools, three of which are BDP-founded (Nina Waits Mukongoro Nursery and Primary School, Byumba Pres’ Nursery and Primary School, and Mama Diane Nursery School). The fourth school, Kishanda Community Nursery and Primary School is overseen by BDP but primarily supported by Emily Spitzer through the Kellermann Foundation.

Through these primary schools, we currently educate over 1,100 children within the community, with over 350 being Batwa. We also support several Batwa students within the secondary sector of education. And even more who are pursuing education at the tertiary level.
As we continue to serve these communities, we face several challenges in our mission to support Batwa education. One challenge is the issue of alcohol consumption by Batwa parents, which negatively influences the children and hinders their ability to attend and complete school.

We feel so proud as BDP when we see Batwa graduatesand former students working and serving within the community. Seeing our work and service come full circle is truly beautiful.”
