Batwa Experience & Culture Preservation
In light of this, BDP purchased 100 acres of land bordering the forest and began to work with the Batwa through the process of cultural preservation. We established a vocational program led by Batwa village elders for Batwa children. During their holidays, the children travel to the purchased forest-like area with the purpose of learning more about their culture and what unique skills and abilities make them “The Forest Keepers.” The Children go through lessons on medicinal practices, hunting methods, storytelling, and the intelligence of harvesting. Through this, the Batwa children are able to experience parts of their culture that they otherwise would not be able to share within their new areas of inhabitance, thus ensuring the passing down of their traditions and history to future generations.
Apart from the Batwa communities benefiting from this history, we offer a one-of-a-kind Batwa experience for all our guests at a reasonable price. An opportunity to interact with one of the indigenous tribes of Africa. The adventure takes viewers through a live re-enactment of the Batwa’s former lifestyle. Batwa community elders as old as 90 years walk viewers through the stories of how the Batwa survived in the forest. They get to understand ancient herbal medicine, their former ways of self-maintenance, demonstrations of former hunting methods, a vibrant community dance, and the sharing of songs.
We understand culture’s value and continue to work with the Batwa to help preserve theirs. This initiative is one of the most crucial ways we support the Batwa cultural preservation. By attending the Batwa Experience, you can be part of the process that not only celebrates Batwa culture but also works towards passing it on to the next generation and ensuring its preservation and memory.
