Together We Can Help The Batwa

Health Initiatives

When Dr. Scott Kellermann began the mobile clinics initiative in 2003, he planted seeds and met a dire need within the community. These mobile clinics grew in number, and later, a piece of land was purchased on which the Bwindi Community Hospital was built. This clinic grew, and through the support of its donors, additional land was acquired, leading to the establishment of the Bwindi Community Hospital (BCH) as well as Uganda Nursing School, Bwindi, which has graduated a Mutwa. At BDP, we do not have any on-staff medical personnel, so when we need to provide healthcare for the Batwa, we work very closely with the Bwindi Community Hospital, which the Kellermann Foundation supports

Batwa Healthcare is one of the most significant portions of our annual budget. We provide healthcare insurance for all Batwa at the Bwindi Community Hospital.

As of 2023, we are providing insurance for 1,258 Batwa. This insurance covers all medical expenses. Additionally, we provide transport to and from the Hospital for checkups or appointments when needed. When a patient is referred to a different hospital within another region or city, we also cover the transportation and accommodation fees for the patient and their attendant and for all the medical expenses.

We are thankful that BDP is now able to cover these expenses fully. Before this feat, we could only cover 40% of the Batwas’ medical expenses per quarter and could not cover their transport costs with our then-constrained budget.

We desire to see the Batwa response to seeking healthcare become a part of them and a service that they appreciate,”
